Video Poker Terms
If you have ever played Video Poker there might be a few terms that you didn’t understand or terms that you didn’t know. Or you just wanted to know the basic terms for Video Poker.
Video Poker, along with several other poker games, have there own terms for there games.
- Action means the total amount of money that a player wages. It usually pertains to players that are counting cards. Occasionally happens to professional video poker players.
- Bank pertains to multiple Video Poker machines which are usually located near each other in the casino.
- Bank roll is a common term in many poker games it means a player’s total amount of money available for gambling. Which basically means that you’re bank is the total amount of money you have in your pocket meant for gambling.
- Bust means a hand that had failed to improve after the draw. It means you lost your bet.
- Cash Back means that a percentage of your losses are returned to the player as a result of using there player card.
- Cash Out is when you withdraw your money
from a casino account.
- Cycle is the average number of hands it takes for the machine to hit a Jackpot. Jackpots are usually won when the royal flush is hit. This happens roughly every 40,000 hands. These are also called Royal Flush Cycles.
- A Credit is equivalent to the amount of one
bet while playing video poker. The credit's value is determined
by the coin amount of the particular machine. If you put $10
into a half-dollar machine, you would have 20 credits.
- Discard - a card dealt to you that you
throw away.
- Drawing hand is the hand that you first get on video poker in which you have to build a solid hand off of.
- Expected return is what your long run average payback on a video poker game. To calculate the return on the video poker game, you multiply the payment percentage by the average hourly wager.
- A Flush is a poker hand that consists of 5
cards of the same suit.
- Full House is a three of a kind and a pair
in the same hand.
- Hand is the five cards that are dealt on
the video poker screen.
- Hand Pay means that if you hit a big Jackpot you are paid by hand instead of credits on the Slot Machine that you were playing at.
- Hold means to keep the card and not discard
it.
- The House Edge is a percent advantage the casino has over the players in the long run.
- Jackpot is an additional bonus for hitting
the Royal Flush while playing video poker.
- Max Bet is where you bet as many credits as
the game allows. This is usually 5 coins.
- Pair is two cards of the same value.
Example: two kings.
- Pat hand is one that can not be improved
and does not need to discard (as in stand pat)
- A Payout is the amount a Video Poker machine pays out for a specific hand.
- The Pay table is the list of possible
payouts and it is displayed on the video poker screen. This will
tell you how much you win on a hand and has a sliding scale for
the more coins you put in.
- Progressive Jackpot is usually when one or more Progressive slots are linked together to create a massive combined Jackpot.
- RNG - Random Number Generator - This is a
computer chip or computer program that generates random numbers
hundreds of times a second. It is used to determine sequence of
cards that will be dealt to you. This is what makes every hand
completely different from each other.
- Royal Flush is the Ten, Jack, Queen, King
and Ace of one suit in your hand.
- Straight is five consecutively numbered
cards in your hand, such as 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
- Straight Flush is five consecutively numbered cards of the
same suit, like 5♣, 6♣, 7♣, 8♣, 9♣
- Wild Card is a card that can be substituted for any other card, for instance to complete a pair, three of a kind, straight or a flush.
